Summary:
Over the last twenty five years, research has clearly demonstrated the possibility of achieving unprecedented strength and/or toughness in very fine grained ceramic materials. However, the extreme difficulties of reproducibly fabricating sub-micron and nanostructured single phase ceramics and ceramic composites has prevented systematic study of these materials or the development of a firm understanding of the phenomena underlying their properties.

Recent progress in the synthesis and processing of fine grained ceramics has resulted in rapid progress in many areas of research including deformation, fracture and fatigue behavior, surface modification, erosion and wear, and optical properties such as transparency and fluorescence. Many applications, including structural materials, ceramic cutting tools, IR transparent windows, and polycrystalline lasers are the subjects of intense research and development. This conference will explore recent progress and identify new opportunities for technological development.

Potential topics include:

  • Synthesis and Processing Techniques
  • Microstructure
  • Mechanical Behavior
  • Grinding and Polishing Behavior
  • Wear and Erosion Resistance
  • Surface Modification
  • Reliability
  • Thermal Properties
  • Functional Ceramics
  • Applications
